Why Volkswagen kept the Golf 7 design conservative

Volkswagen has unveiled its all-new Golf 7 hatchback and the verdict on the design is… dreary. But there’s a reason behind this. Here’s why…

To put it simply, Volkswagen derives a rather large amount of its sales profit from its bread-and-butter Golf. It’s the people’s car. It’s the people’s hatchback that caters for almost everyone in every segment. You want a basic, comfortable and well-specced runabout? Grab a Golf 2.0 FSI. Want to be comfortable and have green eco credentials? The Volkswagen Golf Bluemotion has your name on it. If you’re a speedfreak, then a Volkswagen Golf GTI/R should be on your shopping list.

Volkswagen designers are under strict instructions from the accountants NOT to stuff up a winning formula/design. Think of the new Golf 7 as *cliché alert* evolution, not revolution.

Look, don’t get me wrong. It’s still going to be one very impressive car in terms of build quality, comfort and refinement but something with a little design flair would have been nice. Take a look at some of the offerings from Korea for example. While they may not quite have the same level of sophistication as the Golf, they certainly are striking. Renault and Ford are also making rather attractive hatchbacks.

I’ll pass final design judgement on the new Volkswagen Golf 7 when it eventually arrives in South Africa early next year.
