Five best car commercials (and one crap one)

Aside from actually popping into a car showroom and taking a vehicle out for a test drive, nothing quite sells a vehicle like a television commercial.

Selling cars these days is a tricky business and advertising/marketing agencies are continually coming up with interesting ways of showing off the product. Here are five of my personal car commercials that get a big thumbs up from me. The last, however, gets a double-barreled thumbs down for being totally inane, bland and downright crap. For me, a car advert should sell the product in the most interesting way possible. Whether you’re teasing an upcoming car or undergoing a full-on commercial campaign, nothing overly fancy is required – just keep the viewer interested and you’re on the right track. Three of these commercials are from South Africa and I believe that our advertising agencies are some of the best in the world!

Ford Focus ST

Volkswagen Touareg

RenaultSport Megane RS250

Audi R8 V10

Porsche family tree

And now for the rubbish advert.  What’s the message from this commercial? There’s no mention of the Tiguan that she’s driving. I see a psychotic girlfriend who is overly clingy and so desperate to see her man that she’ll print out a simple email and drive across the country just to score a free hug. How does this sell Volkswagen? Judging by the comments on the video, I’m not the only one that thinks that this is 1’30 of my life that I won’t get back.

There are loads more car adverts out there and I could easily do another dozen “best car commercials” posts. What do you think of my choices? Are there any particular car adverts that have stuck out in your mind?
